Family Dynamics and Behavioral Support in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Summary

Family dynamics play a pivotal role in shaping the developmental trajectory and well-being of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Within the family unit, patterns of interaction, parental beliefs and coping strategies influence both the emergence of behavioural challenges and the effectiveness of support interventions. Behavioural support approaches have increasingly emphasised parent-mediated techniques, in which caregivers are trained to implement evidence-based strategies in everyday routines. Such approaches address externalising behaviours, improve social communication and bolster emotional resilience. The interplay of parental stress, sibling relationships and socio-economic factors further modulates outcomes, underscoring the need for tailored, culturally sensitive programmes. Globally, there is a growing consensus that empowering families through skills training, peer support and integrated services can enhance quality of life for all members and foster more harmonious parent–child relationships.
