Farmer Field Schools and Integrated Pest Management in Agricultural Extension
Summary
Farmer Field Schools (FFSs) are participatory, season-long learning platforms that equip farmers with knowledge and skills to observe agroecosystems, diagnose pest problems and implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. Originating in the late 1980s, FFSs emphasise experiential learning through field trials, group discussion and local adaptation of control measures. IPM combines biological, cultural and chemical tactics to manage pest populations below economic thresholds while minimising environmental and human health risks. Within agricultural extension, FFSs foster farmers’ capacity to take informed decisions, promote peer-to-peer dissemination and contribute to more resilient production systems. The approach has been applied globally, from rice paddies in Southeast Asia to maize plots in East Africa, demonstrating improvements in yield stability, reduced pesticide use and strengthened rural livelihoods.

Technical terms
Farmer Field School: A participatory, group-based extension method that uses field experiments and facilitation to build farmers’ skills in agro-ecological observation and decision-making.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): A decision-support framework combining biological, cultural, mechanical and chemical tools to manage pest populations at acceptable levels while reducing detrimental impacts.
Extension Service: Institutional or community-based provision of agricultural advice, training and technologies to farmers, aiming to improve productivity and sustainability.
Plant Clinic: A diagnostic and advisory outlet where farmers submit crop samples to specialists (‘plant doctors’) who identify pests and diseases and recommend IPM solutions.
