Feline Oral Disease Management and Microbiota Analysis

Summary

Cats commonly suffer from conditions such as periodontal disease and feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS), which manifest as gingival inflammation, mucosal ulceration and eventual tooth loss. Oral health in felines is influenced by an intricate ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and viruses that inhabit supragingival and subgingival niches. Recent advances in high-throughput sequencing and molecular profiling have elucidated the composition and functional potential of the feline oral microbiota, revealing patterns of dysbiosis that correlate with disease severity. Management strategies range from conventional dental extractions and antibiotic therapies to emerging immunomodulatory and regenerative approaches, including mesenchymal stromal cell treatments. Integrating microbial analyses with transcriptomic and metagenomic data has begun to inform personalised diagnostic biomarkers and targeted therapeutics, offering new prospects for preventive care and long-term remission. The global significance of this work extends to comparative medicine and One Health, as feline oral pathogens share commonalities with human periodontal disease, underscoring the translational value of feline models.

Research from Nature Portfolio

A 2023 bulk RNA-seq study of mucosal tissues in cats with FCGS demonstrated enrichment of immune-inflammatory pathways driven by interleukin-6, highlighting NFKB and JAK/STAT signalling as potential targets for novel therapies. A 2021 metagenomic survey of subgingival sites used shotgun sequencing to compare healthy cats and those with periodontitis or FCGS, identifying enrichment of ATP synthase genes and divergence in nitrate reductase pathways, suggesting new avenues for microbial-based interventions. Foundational work in 2019 employed 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterise subgingival communities across health and disease, revealing higher alpha diversity in diseased states and distinguishing beta diversity profiles that underscore opportunistic bacterial taxa in feline periodontal pathology.

The graph below shows the total number of articles in feline oral disease management and microbiota analysis across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS): A multifactorial, immune-mediated inflammatory condition of the feline oral mucosa and gingiva. Microbiota: The community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses, residing in a specific environment. Dysbiosis: A disrupted microbial equilibrium associated with disease. Transcriptomics: The study of the complete set of RNA transcripts produced by an organism or tissue. Metagenomics: The analysis of collective genomes from environmental samples to characterise microbial functions. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs): Multipotent cells used therapeutically for their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties.
