Feminist Perspectives on Gender Equality and Development

Feminist perspectives on gender equality and development encompass a rich array of theoretical and practical approaches that seek to transform power relations, redistribute resources and amplify marginalised voices. Early liberal feminist work emphasised equality before the law and access to education and employment, while radical strands interrogated patriarchy as a system of social reproduction and political domination. Postcolonial and transnational feminisms then illuminated how development policies have been shaped by imperial histories and global economic orders, drawing attention to the intersecting hierarchies of race, class and sexuality. More recently, intersectionality has become central to understanding how multiple forms of oppression operate simultaneously and unevenly across contexts. Development practitioners have responded by embedding gender mainstreaming into institutional frameworks and designing empowerment programmes that aim to shift norms as well as structures. However, critical scholars highlight the risks of co-optation, whereby market logics and instrumentalist agendas dilute emancipatory claims and reduce women’s agency to economic actors or beneficiaries. Emerging work calls for a decolonial-feminist praxis that privileges local knowledge, fosters collective action and builds solidarity across movements. This agenda stresses the importance of participatory methodologies, attention to care work and environmental justice, and strategic alliances between grassroots organisations and policy makers. Together, these perspectives underline the global significance of feminist scholarship and its practical applications in advancing more just, inclusive and sustainable development pathways.
