Food Security and Adaptive Strategies in Small Island Developing States
Summary
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) confront acute food security challenges arising from geographic isolation, limited arable land and freshwater resources, heavy dependence on food imports and mounting pressures from climate change. These interconnected factors exacerbate vulnerability to extreme weather events, disrupt supply chains and heighten exposure to nutrient-poor, processed foods. At the same time, many SIDS are experiencing rising rates of diet-related non-communicable diseases, driven by shifts away from traditional diets towards convenience foods. In response, adaptive strategies have centred on strengthening local production through diversified agro-ecological practices, smallholder support and the revival of home gardens. Policy mechanisms such as targeted subsidies, extension services and institutional procurement (for example in school feeding programmes) seek to bolster domestic supply and encourage healthier diets. Community engagement and intersectoral coordination have emerged as critical components, enabling knowledge sharing, capacity building and local ownership of food system transformation. Technological innovations—including greenhouse cultivation, salt-tolerant crops and solar-powered irrigation—offer further resilience against environmental stressors. Regional networks and governance frameworks aim to harmonise standards, mobilise resources and integrate traditional knowledge with contemporary research. Collectively, these measures underline the global significance of SIDS as living laboratories for resilient food systems and provide practical lessons for other vulnerable regions.
