Summary

Food security under a changing climate depends on the capacity of agricultural and food systems to absorb shocks, maintain production and access, and sustain nutritional quality. Adaptation strategies span technological, ecological and governance dimensions. On the technological front, climate‐resilient crop varieties, precision water management and digital decision‐support tools are being deployed to stabilise yields under heat and water stress. Ecological approaches include diversification of cropping systems, agroecological intensification and landscape‐level water conservation to enhance system resilience. Governance and policy adaptations engage stakeholders at local, national and international levels, integrating weather forecasting, insurance schemes and flexible trade policies to buffer communities from extreme events. Together these responses seek to close yield gaps, preserve biodiversity, reduce post‐harvest loss and promote equitable access to food throughout volatile climatic conditions.

Recent studies have used integrated assessment frameworks to explore stakeholder‐driven pathways to climate‐smart nutrition security in sub‐Saharan Africa. By combining climate–crop–emissions modelling with on-the-ground stakeholder consultations, these analyses demonstrate that diversifying agricultural production towards micronutrient-rich foods is essential to secure adequate nutrient supply by mid‐century. Achieving this outcome requires either unprecedented yield improvements or expanded cultivation, each with trade-offs in greenhouse-gas emissions. The alternative—reliance on increased food imports—poses economic and political challenges. Such work highlights the critical role of context-specific policy measures that balance local production enhancements, cross-border trade adjustments and targeted support for smallholder farmers.
