Reptile foraging encompasses a spectrum of strategies through which individuals locate, acquire and process prey, reflecting adaptations to habitat structure, sensory capabilities and energy requirements. Active foraging involves continuous movement and search effort, often in heterogeneous environments, whereas ambush or “sit-and-wait” foraging relies on concealment and rapid strikes when prey passes within reach. These contrasting tactics embody trade-offs between energy expenditure, predation risk and encounter rates. Underlying decisions are influenced by prey distribution, environmental variability and the internal state of the animal, leading to risk-sensitive adjustments in behaviour.
