Summary

The forensic investigation of neck trauma and asphyxial fatalities encompasses a multidisciplinary evaluation of mechanical, histological and radiological evidence to determine cause and manner of death. Mechanical asphyxia may arise from compression of the airway or vasculature by external forces in cases of hanging, ligature strangulation, manual throttling or accidental compression.
