Fuel Cell Technologies and Applications
Summary
Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy through redox reactions, offering high efficiencies and near-zero emissions when fuelled by hydrogen or other clean fuels. Several principal types have been developed to meet diverse applications: proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) operate at low to moderate temperatures and are prized for their rapid start-up and high power density, making them suitable for automotive, portable and backup power systems; solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) function at high temperatures and are well suited to stationary power generation, combined heat and power networks and industrial processes; alkaline fuel cells (AFCs), molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) and phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFCs) occupy intermediate niches, balancing cost, durability and operating conditions for specialised applications. Advances in materials science, notably in membranes, catalysts and interconnects, have driven improvements in durability, power density and cost reduction, while system-level engineering has enhanced thermal management and balance-of-plant integration. Globally, fuel cells are being deployed in transport fleets, residential and commercial cogeneration, remote and off-grid installations, and even aviation prototypes, underpinning decarbonisation strategies and energy security. The modularity of fuel cell stacks allows flexible scaling from watts to megawatts, while coupling with renewable hydrogen production and carbon capture technologies promises fully integrated zero-carbon energy ecosystems. Despite challenges in hydrogen storage, infrastructure rollout and precious metal costs, collaborative efforts across academia, industry and policy domains continue to accelerate technology maturation and commercialisation, positioning fuel cells as a cornerstone of the sustainable energy transition.
