Seminal microbiome investigations have further elucidated the link between microbial composition and symptom severity in irritable bowel syndrome. Large-scale 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that patients with diarrhoeal and mixed subtypes exhibit reduced diversity of butyrate-producing Clostridiales and diminished methanogen populations, correlating with heightened abdominal pain, bloating and impaired mucosal barrier function. These insights underscore the potential of microbial signatures both as biomarkers of disease activity and as targets for personalised interventions aimed at improving quality of life.
