Fusarium Wilt Management in Lettuce Cultivars
Summary
Fusarium wilt, caused by the soil‐borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lactucae, poses a major threat to global lettuce production through vascular colonisation, wilting and premature plant death. The pathogen persists in soil as chlamydospores and spreads via water, machinery and seedling transplants. Management hinges on an integrated approach combining resistant or tolerant cultivars, crop rotation with non‐host species, soil solarisation or steaming, biological antagonists and judicious fungicide application. Advances in molecular diagnostics now enable precise detection of pathogen races, guiding cultivar deployment and aiding rapid intervention. Understanding host–pathogen interactions at the genetic level informs breeding programmes that stack multiple resistance loci, while optimisation of cultural practices reduces inoculum pressure and extends the longevity of resistant cultivars in commercial systems.

Technical terms
Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lactucae: A specialised form of Fusarium oxysporum causing wilt in lettuce.
Real‐time PCR assay: A molecular technique that quantifies specific DNA sequences in real time for pathogen detection.
Race: A genetically distinct subgroup of a pathogen species differing in host specificity and virulence.
