Gender Disparities in Political Knowledge and Engagement

Gender disparities in political knowledge and engagement remain a persistent feature of democratic systems worldwide. Women, on average, score lower on conventional factual quizzes about institutions, electoral rules and political elites, and report less interest in politics than men. Yet this gap is multifaceted: while women tend to refrain from expressing views on complex policy questions, they often demonstrate comparable or greater sophistication in articulating political attitudes. Factors underpinning these disparities range from early socialisation and access to political resources to psychological influences such as internal efficacy and the impact of depressive symptoms. Structural changes, including educational reforms and gender-equality legislation, have been shown to narrow gaps over time in some contexts, signalling the potential for policy interventions to foster inclusive political participation. These dynamics bear directly on the legitimacy of representative institutions and the realisation of equitable policymaking, underscoring the global significance of understanding and addressing gendered patterns of knowledge and engagement.
