Gender Equity in Medical Education and Practice
Summary
The past three decades have witnessed a steady increase in female medical school entrants, yet persistent gaps remain in representation, remuneration and leadership. While parity is approaching in undergraduate and postgraduate training cohorts, women continue to face barriers within speciality selection, academic promotion and clinical leadership roles. Cultural norms, implicit biases and structural impediments contribute to disproportionate attrition of women at critical career junctures, particularly within surgical and senior academic posts. Parenthood and caregiving disproportionately affect women’s career trajectories through inflexible training schedules, inadequate parental leave provisions and limited access to on-site childcare and lactation facilities. These inequities compromise workforce diversity, undermine morale and risk suboptimal patient care through loss of talent and perspective. Advances in understanding gender dynamics have led to targeted mentoring schemes, pipeline initiatives and leadership training aimed at reducing the “glass ceiling” effect. International policy frameworks and institutional strategies now emphasise transparent appointment processes, pay equity audits and flexible career pathways. Continued interdisciplinary research and evidence-based interventions are essential to transform medical education and practice into an inclusive environment that optimises talent, improves retention and enhances healthcare quality on a global scale.
