Summary
Canid lineages—including wolves, jackals, dingoes and domestic dogs—exhibit remarkable genetic variation shaped by historical population expansions, contractions and interspecific gene flow. Within wild populations, levels of heterozygosity and allelic richness are influenced by habitat fragmentation, demographic bottlenecks and landscape barriers. Hybridization between wild canids and domestic dogs or between closely related wild taxa can introduce novel alleles, enhance adaptive potential in changing environments and, in some cases, threaten the genetic integrity of endangered lineages. Advances in genome-wide sequencing and multilocus genotyping have revealed complex admixture patterns, information on parentage and kinship, and signatures of selection acting on traits such as coat colouration and altitude adaptation. Understanding the balance between beneficial introgression and hybrid swamping is central to conservation management, guiding decisions on whether to protect hybrids as reservoirs of adaptive diversity or to prioritise the genetic purity of ancestral populations. By integrating phylogeography, population genomics and ecological context, researchers are elucidating the evolutionary processes that generate and maintain diversity across the global distribution of canids.

A study of golden jackals in the Carpathian Basin employed gene sequencing and fragment-length polymorphism analyses to investigate rare white and black fur variants. Researchers genotyped loci known to underlie coat colour in dogs (MC1R for white and CBD103 for black) and found that all white-coated individuals carried a dog-derived mutation in homozygous form, yet showed no evidence of recent hybrid ancestry. In contrast, black and mottled jackals were confirmed as jackal–dog hybrids. Kinship analyses further revealed familial links among colour variants, suggesting that some coat mutations may trace to early, naturally occurring hybridization events rather than ongoing domestic dog introgression.
