Global Citizenship Education and Civic Engagement

Global Citizenship Education (GCE) has emerged as a vital response to the complex interdependencies of the twenty-first century, aiming to equip learners with the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to navigate and shape a rapidly changing world. At its core, GCE integrates social responsibility, global competence and civic engagement, emphasising ethical awareness, critical reflection and participatory action. Programmes draw on transformative pedagogies—such as dialogue, reflection and experiential learning—to foster learners’ capacity to analyse power relations, embrace cultural diversity and contribute to sustainable development. By linking local realities with global challenges, GCE encourages individuals to exercise agency through community projects, policy debates and collaborative problem-solving. Current research explores effective curriculum designs, assessment tools and policy frameworks to ensure that global citizenship learning leads to meaningful, measurable engagement in democratic and transnational contexts.

Recent studies have examined the distribution and interrelations of global citizenship skills among undergraduates in a borderless academic environment. A large-scale survey employing a tripartite framework—social responsibility, global competence and civic engagement—revealed that while students generally exhibit strong ethical awareness and intercultural understanding, their active participation in civic initiatives often lags behind. Statistical analyses showed that disciplinary affiliation and institutional culture significantly influence each skill dimension, with arts and humanities students tending to report higher engagement levels than those in technical fields. The research highlights the need for integrated curricular interventions—such as interdisciplinary modules and service-learning projects—that can balance the development of awareness, competence and engagement across diverse student populations.
