Global Epidemiology of Mental Health Disorders
Summary
Mental health disorders account for a substantial and growing share of the global burden of disease, affecting communities across low-, middle- and high-income regions. Common conditions such as depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia contribute heavily to disability, often measured in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Prevalence estimates vary markedly by region, demographic group and socioeconomic status, with higher rates typically observed among women, young adults and populations subject to conflict or social inequality. Urbanisation, migration and exposure to violence further amplify risk, while stigma and limited access to care sustain large treatment gaps. The global economic impact is profound, encompassing direct health-care costs, productivity losses and broader societal burdens. Trends over recent decades indicate rising prevalence in many countries, driven in part by improved identification but also by genuine increases in stressors related to modern life. Efforts to quantify and compare epidemiological patterns have underscored the need for harmonised surveillance, investment in community-based services and integration of mental health into primary care platforms. A balanced approach that addresses social determinants, reduces barriers to care and supports early intervention is essential to mitigate the pervasive and interconnected challenges posed by mental health disorders worldwide.
