Summary

Innovations in post-extractivist paradigms propose transitions towards reduced sand dependency—through recycled aggregates, alternative building materials and demand-management policies—thus mitigating deleterious impacts while addressing infrastructure needs. These strategies underscore the necessity of cross-scale coordination, transparent permitting processes and equitable benefit-sharing to ensure that sand extraction does not undermine the very foundations of ecological resilience and social welfare.

In a case study of peri-urban Ghana, the removal of surface sand significantly reduced soil carbon and essential macronutrients, while increasing compaction and altering texture and moisture regimes. These changes translated into the loss of arable land, destruction of food crops and deterioration of water access and local infrastructure. The research highlights the absence of compensation mechanisms and land reclamation programmes, calling for stronger enforcement of extraction permits, the establishment of rehabilitation funds and promotion of sustainable building materials to curb demand.
