Graphene-Based Nanocomposite Materials and Applications

Summary

Graphene-based nanocomposites represent a class of materials in which graphene or its derivatives are integrated within a host matrix to enhance mechanical, electrical, thermal and barrier properties. The unique two-dimensional honeycomb lattice of sp²-bonded carbon atoms endows graphene with exceptional tensile strength, high electrical conductivity and large specific surface area. When dispersed in polymers, ceramics or metals, graphene nanosheets and other allotropes such as graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) impart multifunctional characteristics. Recent advances have focused on controlled functionalisation to improve interfacial adhesion and prevent aggregation, as well as green synthesis routes for scalable production. Key applications span from electromagnetic interference shielding and thermal management in electronics, to photocatalysis for environmental decontamination, advanced sensors, novel energy storage devices and high-performance coatings. Tailoring the dispersion, orientation and chemical compatibility of graphene fillers within diverse matrices has opened pathways towards lightweight structural composites, tunable optical devices and smart responsive materials with global impact in sustainable technologies.

Research from Nature Portfolio

One study demonstrated a green route to magnetite iron oxide–rGO nanocomposites using a plant extract as a reducing, capping and stabilising agent. The resulting Fe₃O₄/rGO hybrid exhibited controlled particle size (<100 nm) and roughened morphologies, achieving over 70 % degradation of an organic dye under mild conditions, highlighting its potential as an efficient photocatalyst for water treatment. Another investigation into rGO grafted with water-soluble polymers revealed tunable lower critical solution temperatures (30–70 °C) and the formation of unique rod-like nanostructures. By employing a ‘grafting from’ RAFT polymerisation method on functionalised GO sheets, the study achieved copolymer brushes that endow the composite with stimuli-responsive behaviour, pointing towards applications in smart sensing and drug delivery.

Graphene-Based Nanocomposite Materials and Applications publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in graphene-based nanocomposite materials and applications across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Graphene: A single-atom-thick sheet of sp²-bonded carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, noted for high strength, electrical and thermal conductivity.

Graphene oxide (GO): An oxidised derivative of graphene bearing oxygen-containing functional groups that increase solubility and facilitate chemical modification.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO): A form of graphene oxide that has been partially deoxygenated to recover conductivity while retaining some functional group sites for dispersion.

Nanocomposite: A material system in which nanoscale fillers are dispersed within a matrix to enhance mechanical, thermal, electrical or barrier properties.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding: The attenuation of electromagnetic radiation using conductive or magnetic materials to protect electronic devices.
