Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanomaterials in Sensing and Photocatalysis
Summary
Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a metal-free polymeric semiconductor distinguished by its tri-s-triazine framework, visible-light absorption and earth-abundant composition. Its two-dimensional layered morphology, with tuneable bandgap energies around 2.7 eV, affords efficient separation of photogenerated charges, making it an appealing photocatalyst for environmental remediation, hydrogen evolution and carbon dioxide reduction. Concurrently, g-C3N4’s electron-rich surface, versatile surface functionalities and strong affinity for biomolecules underpin its role in electrochemical and optical sensing platforms. Recent advances have focused on structural engineering—such as nanoscale dispersion, doping and heterojunction formation—to enhance light harvesting, charge transfer and molecular recognition. Applications range from trace detection of heavy metals via fluorescence quenching to photoelectrochemical sensors for biomarkers, highlighting the material’s rapid response, high selectivity and low-cost synthesis. The global pursuit of sustainable energy conversion and real-time diagnostics has driven concerted efforts to integrate g-C3N4 nanomaterials into device architectures, including LED emitters, water-splitting systems and portable sensing modules, underscoring their interdisciplinary appeal and practical potential.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of tailored g-C3N4 derivatives in solid-state lighting devices. By constructing an aromatic carbon nitride emitter with optimised carrier transport pathways, researchers achieved single-component white-light electroluminescence at a low turn-on voltage of 3.2 V. The device exhibited warm-white light emission with a high external quantum efficiency approaching 1.2 % and luminance exceeding 1800 cd m−2. This work exemplifies the integration of carbon nitride’s intrinsic luminescent properties with device-level engineering, paving the way for low-cost, stable white lighting solutions based entirely on g-C3N4 nanomaterials.

Technical terms
Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4): A metal-free, two-dimensional polymeric semiconductor composed of tri-s-triazine units, with a layered structure and a bandgap of approximately 2.7 eV.
Photocatalysis: A process by which a material absorbs light to generate electron–hole pairs that drive chemical reactions, such as pollutant degradation or hydrogen evolution.
Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET): A distance-dependent mechanism in which energy transfer occurs non-radiatively between a donor and acceptor fluorophore, used for sensing through changes in emission intensity.
Heterojunction: An interface formed between two semiconductor materials with differing band structures, facilitating charge separation and enhancing photocatalytic or photoelectrochemical performance.
Quantum yield: The ratio of emitted to absorbed photons in a luminescent process, indicating the efficiency of photoluminescence.
