Summary

The Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) is the only alpine crane species, breeding on the Tibetan Plateau and wintering across central and south Asia. Habitat selection is governed by a combination of ecological factors—water depth and marsh area for nesting, availability of crop residues and wetland edge for foraging, and safe roosting sites during migration. Breeding pairs favour shallow alpine meadows and freshwater marshes with minimal disturbance, while wintering flocks rely on agricultural paddies and seasonally flooded wetlands. Migration routes traverse high-altitude valleys and lakeshores, with critical stopover habitats that are often outside protected areas. Conservation efforts centre on maintaining large, contiguous wetland complexes, ensuring retention of crop stubble in farmland, and securing migration corridors. Integrated management of grazing, agriculture and wetland restoration has become essential to mitigate habitat loss from infrastructure development, climate change and increased human disturbance. Collaborative planning across political boundaries is vital to safeguard breeding grounds, wintering sites and migratory pathways of this vulnerable species.

Recent studies have employed machine-learning species distribution models to map breeding habitat suitability across the Central Asian uplands. These analyses identified that approximately one quarter of predicted breeding areas lie outside current reserves, pinpointing regions in the Hengduan Mountains, the Kunlun Mountains and the Pamir Plateau as urgent priorities for protection. The work defined key environmental thresholds—elevations above 2,800 m, maximum summer temperatures below 20.5 °C and high temperature seasonality—that drive nest-site suitability. By quantifying conservation gaps, this approach provides decision-makers with spatially explicit guidance to extend protected area networks and direct field surveys to unassessed zones.
