Habitat Selection and Population Dynamics of Little Owls

Little Owls (Athene noctua) inhabit a variety of landscapes across Europe, Asia and North Africa, exhibiting marked flexibility in habitat selection yet facing widespread population declines in agricultural regions. These small nocturnal raptors select territories based on the availability of foraging opportunities, nesting sites and shelter, often favouring mosaic landscapes where short grass, orchards, scattered trees and built structures provide a rich prey base of invertebrates and small vertebrates. Territory size and spatial distribution vary with land‐use intensity, weather conditions and interspecific interactions, influencing foraging range, reproductive output and survival.

Population dynamics of Little Owls are shaped by demographic processes such as juvenile survival, adult longevity and dispersal among fragmented habitat patches. Seasonal extremes—particularly harsh winters with prolonged snow cover—can reduce juvenile survival and limit recruitment. Conversely, anthropogenic interventions such as supplementary feeding and habitat management can bolster reproductive success and adult survival, though the benefits depend on habitat quality and food availability. Long‐term persistence often requires connectivity between subpopulations and the maintenance of resource‐rich microhabitats within broader agricultural or urban matrices.
