Health Benefits of Green Tea Polyphenols
Summary
Green tea polyphenols, most notably catechins such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), are bioactive compounds that contribute to a wide array of health benefits. Their potent antioxidant capacity underlies protection against oxidative stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species and inducing endogenous antioxidant defences. Anti‐inflammatory effects arise through modulation of signalling pathways that govern cytokine production and enzyme activity. In cardiovascular health, polyphenols improve endothelial function, reduce blood pressure and favourably alter lipid profiles. In metabolic contexts, EGCG and related catechins enhance insulin sensitivity, promote lipolysis and assist in weight management. Anticancer properties have been attributed to inhibition of tumour cell proliferation, induction of apoptosis and suppression of angiogenesis across multiple organ systems. Neuroprotective actions include mitigation of neuroinflammation and preservation of neuronal viability, while emerging data suggest benefits for skin health and microbial defence. Practical applications range from dietary consumption to development of novel delivery systems aimed at overcoming intrinsic limitations in stability and absorption. Collectively, these multifaceted effects position green tea polyphenols as valuable adjuncts in preventive and therapeutic strategies with global relevance.
