Health Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

Individuals with intellectual disabilities experience a complex constellation of health challenges that span physical, mental and social domains. Characterised by limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviours, this population encounters heightened rates of chronic conditions, premature mortality and barriers to effective care. Systemic factors such as inadequate recognition of needs, fragmented service delivery and lack of reasonable adjustments exacerbate health inequities. Progress towards equitable care has been driven by policy reforms advocating disability inclusion, development of specialised community services and training of health professionals. Integrated models that align primary, acute and social care resources are emerging to promote coordinated management of multimorbidity, enhance communication with carers and support informed decision-making. Global initiatives underscore the necessity of tailored screening programmes, proactive health promotion and robust data systems to monitor outcomes. Achieving parity in health requires ongoing investment in workforce capacity, accessible information formats and partnership with people with intellectual disabilities to co-design responsive services.
