Health Impacts of Persistent Organic Pollutants

Summary

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are lipophilic synthetic chemicals known for environmental persistence, bioaccumulation and long-range transport. Key classes include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides, polybrominated flame retardants and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Human exposure occurs mainly through diet, inhalation of contaminated air and maternal transfer during pregnancy and lactation. Epidemiological and experimental data implicate POPs in endocrine disruption, metabolic syndrome, neurodevelopmental deficits, immunotoxicity and cancer. Early-life exposures, even at low doses, can alter hormonal regulation and epigenetic programming, leading to obesity, insulin resistance, altered growth trajectories and behavioural impairments. In adults, associations have been reported with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and reproductive disorders. Global monitoring reveals uneven declines in legacy POPs but rising levels of newer compounds. Addressing health risks requires integrated approaches in surveillance, food safety regulation, remediation and public education to reduce exposure and safeguard vulnerable populations.

Recent studies have explored the intersection between diet quality and chemical exposure. Analysis of a diverse pregnancy cohort demonstrated that adherence to recommended healthy-eating indices, including Mediterranean dietary patterns, was unexpectedly associated with increased plasma concentrations of PCBs and PFAS. This association was strongest among Asian and Pacific Islander participants, suggesting ethnic or cultural dietary factors influence contaminant intake. Findings indicate that dietary guidance alone may not mitigate exposure risks and highlight the need for food chain regulation to lower POP burdens in commonly consumed produce, fish and dairy products to preserve both nutritional and toxicological health benefits.
