Summary
Health Information Exchange (HIE) systems facilitate the secure electronic sharing of patient data across disparate healthcare settings, supporting timely decision-making, continuity of care and population-level analytics. Interoperability in this context encompasses technical, syntactic and semantic dimensions that ensure data can be transmitted, interpreted and acted upon across electronic health record (EHR) platforms. Progress in interoperability has been driven by standards-based frameworks such as Health Level 7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), which enables modular, resource-oriented data exchange, and by national and regional initiatives that mandate data-sharing agreements, consent management and robust privacy controls. Despite demonstrable benefits—reduced duplication of tests, improved care coordination and better patient outcomes—persistent barriers include heterogeneous data models, variable terminology mapping, governance complexities and uneven uptake among smaller providers. Globally, HIE systems are recognised as essential infrastructure for integrated care pathways, telehealth services and pandemic response, with practical applications ranging from event notification to longitudinal health records and advanced clinical decision support.
