Health Locus of Control in Mental Health Behavior

Summary

Health locus of control refers to a person’s belief regarding the factors that govern their health and well-being. Individuals with an internal health locus of control perceive that their own actions and decisions directly influence their mental health outcomes, whereas those with an external orientation attribute outcomes to chance, fate or powerful others. This construct has been extensively studied in relation to anxiety, depression and compliance with preventive health behaviours, revealing that an internal orientation often buffers against psychological distress. Research has demonstrated its relevance across the lifespan and in varied cultural contexts, with internality linked to greater resilience, proactive coping strategies and engagement with mental health services. Understanding the dynamics of health locus of control has practical applications in designing public health campaigns, tailoring psychotherapeutic interventions and informing policy measures that enhance individual agency. As mental health challenges escalate globally, the locus of control framework offers a robust lens through which to assess and promote adaptive health behaviours.
