Heutagogy and Self-Directed Learning in Adult Education

Heutagogy, or self-determined learning, extends traditional adult education by placing the learner at the centre of curriculum design, implementation and assessment. Building on andragogical principles, heutagogy emphasises autonomy, capacity for self-reflection and capability development in complex, fast-moving environments. Adult learners are encouraged to formulate learning goals, select resources, employ metacognitive strategies and evaluate outcomes in iterative cycles.
