HIV/AIDS Epidemiology and Sexual Health Education

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) remain a major global public health challenge. The epidemiology of HIV/AIDS covers the study of how the virus spreads, who is most affected and the factors that drive transmission. While antiretroviral therapy has transformed HIV from a fatal illness into a manageable chronic condition, new infections persist among key populations such as people who inject drugs, female sex workers and men who have sex with men. Surveillance and modelling efforts have revealed diverse epidemic trajectories across regions, with some areas achieving declines in incidence and mortality and others experiencing resurgence. Concurrently, sexual health education has shifted from narrow abstinence‐only approaches towards comprehensive programmes that integrate HIV prevention with reproductive health, stigma reduction and gender‐sensitive messaging. Effective interventions now include school‐based curricula, digital outreach and community engagement, yet gaps in coverage and cultural barriers continue to impede knowledge uptake and access to services. Addressing these challenges requires evidence‐based policy, culturally adapted education and the mobilisation of affected communities to reinforce prevention, promote early testing and support sustained treatment adherence.

Recent projections of HIV trends in the Middle East and North Africa forecast rising incidence, mortality and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) by 2030 in several countries. Using Global Burden of Disease and UNAIDS data with joinpoint regression, researchers identified heterogeneous epidemic growth—some nations showing declines linked to treatment scale-up, while others face accelerating transmission driven by gaps in prevention coverage. The analysis underscores the need to expand HIV testing, increase antiretroviral therapy uptake and deploy targeted interventions for high-risk groups to meet international reduction goals.
