HIV/AIDS Knowledge and Prevention Strategies

HIV/AIDS remains a major global health challenge, with prevention hinging on both biomedical advances and sociobehavioural measures. Comprehensive knowledge of HIV transmission, coupled with accurate risk perception, underpins individual and community uptake of preventive measures. Biomedical tools such as antiretroviral therapy (ART), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and voluntary medical male circumcision have demonstrably reduced incidence when paired with robust education and destigmatisation campaigns. Behavioural interventions focus on consistent condom use, harm reduction among people who inject drugs and partner reduction strategies. Structural approaches address economic, educational and gender inequalities that shape vulnerability. Integrated strategies that span policy, community mobilisation and health system strengthening are essential to achieve sustained epidemic control and ensure equitable access to prevention and treatment services.

Recent studies have examined the interplay between socioeconomic status, education and discriminatory attitudes towards people living with HIV. In a large population-based survey of women of reproductive age, low levels of HIV knowledge and negative attitudes were disproportionately observed among rural residents and those from lower socioeconomic groups. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that higher educational attainment and prior HIV testing were independently associated with more positive attitudes and greater understanding of HIV transmission routes. These findings underscore the need to tailor communication and service delivery to marginalised communities to reduce stigma and improve uptake of testing and preventive interventions.
