Hybrid Pixel Detector Technologies in Radiation Measurement

Summary

Hybrid pixel detectors integrate a segmented semiconductor sensor layer with a dedicated readout ASIC at each pixel, enabling simultaneous spatial, temporal and energy measurements of ionising radiation. The sensor, typically silicon or high-Z materials such as CdTe, is bump-bonded to a matrix of amplifier–discriminator channels. Pixels record both the time of arrival and the time-over-threshold, providing high-resolution time stamping and energy deposition data. Recent devices achieve spatial resolutions on the order of tens of micrometres, temporal resolutions below one nanosecond and energy sensitivity spanning from a few kiloelectronvolts to several megaelectronvolts. Innovations in tile-able readout chips, advanced calibration schemes and three-dimensional track reconstruction have extended the versatility of these systems. Hybrid pixel technologies are now central to applications in high-energy physics experiments, synchrotron imaging, medical diagnostics, space radiation monitoring and security screening, where their high count-rate capability, radiation hardness and spectroscopic precision deliver critical performance.

Hybrid Pixel Detector Technologies in Radiation Measurement publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in hybrid pixel detector technologies in radiation measurement across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Hybrid pixel detector: A radiation sensor comprising a pixelated semiconductor layer bump-bonded to a matching array of readout ASIC channels for simultaneous spatial, temporal and energy measurements.

ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit): A customised microelectronic chip designed to perform dedicated signal processing functions at each pixel.

Time-of-Arrival (ToA): The timestamp at which a pixel signal first crosses its discriminator threshold, used to determine event timing.

Time-over-Threshold (ToT): The duration for which a pixel signal remains above threshold, correlated with the deposited energy.

Bump bonding: A micro-assembly technique that connects each pixel of the sensor to the corresponding channel of the readout ASIC via microscopic metal bumps.
