Summary

Image-enhanced endoscopy has transformed the detection and characterisation of gastric neoplasia by augmenting conventional white-light views with advanced optical and digital processing. A 2021 study evaluated the visibility of gastric mucosal atrophy and neoplasms with two modes of texture and colour enhancement imaging and demonstrated markedly improved lesion contrast and higher visibility scores compared with white-light imaging, supporting its role as a primary observation tool in routine gastroscopy. Foundational work on linked colour imaging established a colour-microstructure-vessel framework for distal gastric disease, achieving near-perfect sensitivity and specificity for gastric cancer detection by classifying mucosal colour patterns and vessel changes into reproducible criteria.
