Summary
Imitation skills encompass the capacity to observe, internalise and reproduce the actions of others and constitute a cornerstone of early social and cognitive development. In young children with autism, deficits in imitation often emerge in both object‐centred and gesture‐based tasks, reflecting atypical motor planning, sensory integration and social motivation. These difficulties can hinder the acquisition of language, the establishment of joint attention and the capacity for observational learning. Nonetheless, the profile of imitation in autism is heterogeneous: some children may more readily copy actions involving objects, while others respond better to repetitive or contingent models. Emerging evidence highlights the distinct processing of meaningful versus meaningless gestures, the influence of visual attention on performance and the predictive value of early imitative competence for subsequent language gains. Understanding these patterns underpins the design of tailored interventions that harness imitation to foster communication, play and social engagement.
