Molluscan hemocyanins are large, multimeric copper‐containing glycoproteins that function primarily as oxygen carriers in the haemolymph of snails, limpets and related molluscs. These combined activities underpin their use as carrier proteins and adjuvants for haptens, antigens and vaccines, and support emerging applications as non-specific immunostimulants in tumour models. Key examples include the established keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) and novel candidates from Concholepas, Fissurella and freshwater gastropods. The stability of these glycoproteins under varied pH and temperature conditions, alongside their low toxicity in vivo, emphasises their global significance for immunotherapy, diagnostic tool development and as platforms for antibody generation.

Recent studies have demonstrated that hemocyanin extracted from the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei can be purified efficiently at industrial scale and serves as a highly soluble carrier for hapten conjugation. Compared with keyhole limpet hemocyanin, peptide–shrimp-hemocyanin conjugates exhibit improved solubility post-conjugation and elicit equivalent titres of functional antibodies in mammalian hosts. The generated polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies have proven effective in western blot, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry, indicating the potential of shrimp hemocyanin as a cost-effective substitute adjuvant in vaccine and antibody production workflows.
