Summary
Phytochemical compounds derived from plants constitute an expanding repertoire of agents capable of modulating immune function. These naturally occurring molecules—including polysaccharides, flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids and glycosides—interact with both innate and adaptive arms of the immune system. Mechanistically, they may enhance pathogen clearance by stimulating macrophage phagocytosis and natural killer cell activity or temper excessive inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokine production and downregulating key enzymes such as cyclooxygenase-2. Their dual roles as immunostimulants and immunosuppressants position them as promising adjuncts in combating infections, limiting autoimmune flare-ups or improving cancer immunotherapy. Moreover, their structural diversity allows fine-tuning of bioavailability and target specificity, paving the way for the design of safer, both preventive and therapeutic, interventions. Globally, this area of research holds significant public health implications, offering cost-effective, plant-based strategies to enhance host defence in resource-limited settings and mitigate reliance on synthetic drugs with severe side-effect profiles.
