Impact of Allergic Rhinitis on Quality of Life and Health Outcomes

Summary

Allergic rhinitis is one of the most prevalent immunological disorders worldwide, affecting up to a third of the population. It arises from IgE-driven inflammation of the nasal mucosa in response to environmental allergens, leading to sneezing, nasal congestion, itching and rhinorrhoea. The burden of allergic rhinitis extends beyond nasal symptoms to disrupt sleep architecture, reducing restorative sleep and contributing to daytime somnolence, impaired cognitive performance and reduced productivity. Persistent nasal inflammation can also provoke or exacerbate psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression, undermining overall health-related quality of life and imposing an economic burden through increased healthcare utilisation and absenteeism.

Impact of Allergic Rhinitis on Quality of Life and Health Outcomes publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in impact of allergic rhinitis on quality of life and health outcomes across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Allergic rhinitis: An IgE-mediated inflammation of the nasal mucosa triggered by exposure to airborne allergens, characterised by sneezing, nasal obstruction and rhinorrhoea.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL): A multidimensional concept encompassing physical, psychological and social domains of health as perceived by individuals and influenced by disease and treatment.

Immunoglobulin E (IgE): A class of antibody central to type I hypersensitivity reactions, binding to high-affinity receptors on mast cells and basophils to mediate allergic inflammation.

Cytokine: A signalling protein, such as interleukins or tumour necrosis factors, released by immune cells to regulate inflammation and intercellular communication.
