Summary
Allergic rhinitis is an immunoglobulin E–mediated inflammatory disorder of the nasal mucosa characterised by sneezing, rhinorrhoea, nasal congestion and pruritus. Environmental factors play a central role in modulating symptom severity and disease prevalence. Aeroallergens such as pollens, mould spores, house dust mites and animal dander act as primary triggers, their abundance and distribution governed by seasonal and meteorological variables including temperature, humidity and wind speed. Concurrent exposure to air pollutants—particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5), ozone and nitrogen dioxide—can exacerbate mucosal barrier dysfunction, amplify inflammatory signalling and enhance sensitisation to allergens. Urbanisation and climate change have been linked to prolonged pollen seasons and increased allergenic potency, thereby extending the duration of symptom burden. Conversely, non-drug approaches such as face masks, barrier gels and air filtration systems can reduce allergen delivery to the nasal epithelium, offering accessible strategies to mitigate symptoms. Integrating knowledge of ambient exposures with individual avoidance and public health measures underpins effective management and highlights the global significance of environmental control in allergic disease.
