Impact Resistance of Ultra-High Performance Concrete

Summary

Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) combines an optimised particle packing, high cementitious content and often millimetre-scale steel fibres to achieve compressive strengths exceeding 150 MPa and remarkable toughness under dynamic loads. Its dense matrix and fibre-bridging mechanisms confer pronounced strain-rate sensitivity, yielding enhanced resistance to spalling, scabbing and penetration when subjected to impacts ranging from low-velocity drop weights to high-velocity projectiles and blast events. Research has demonstrated that tailoring fibre type, dosage and distribution, together with aggregate selection and multi-layered configurations, can markedly improve the energy absorption capacity and limit damage propagation. Numerical modelling and empirical formulae have advanced predictive capability, linking material properties to impact performance. Owing to its superior durability and protective qualities, UHPC finds growing application in critical infrastructure, military fortifications and civil structures requiring blast mitigation or ballistic protection. Ongoing work addresses sustainability through alternative binders, optimisation of mixed designs and integration with digital fabrication and machine-learning tools to predict performance under extreme loading.

Impact Resistance of Ultra-High Performance Concrete publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in impact resistance of ultra-high performance concrete across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC): A cementitious composite with very high compressive strength (>150 MPa), low porosity and steel fibre reinforcement for enhanced toughness.

Spalling: The ejection of surface fragments from the rear face of concrete under high-strain-rate loading, often leading to secondary hazards.

Scabbing: Localised damage and material loss on the impact face or rear face due to tensile wave reflection and shear failure.

Strain-rate effect: The increase in apparent strength and stiffness of a material when loaded at high rates, influencing dynamic response under impact.

Fibre bridging: The mechanism by which dispersed fibres across cracks carry load and limit crack opening, enhancing post-crack energy absorption.

Penetration depth: The maximum depth achieved by a projectile or fragment within a concrete target, used as a primary metric of impact resistance.
