Summary
Epileptic seizures expose individuals to a spectrum of injury risks driven by abrupt loss of consciousness, involuntary motor phenomena and impaired protective reflexes. During a generalized tonic-clonic seizure, vigorous muscle contractions and sudden falls can lead to fractures, head trauma and soft-tissue contusions. In domestic or occupational settings, contact with open flames or hot liquids may provoke burns, while immersion in water carries the hazard of submersion injuries. Beyond direct physical trauma, comorbid cognitive and mood disorders, as well as side effects of antiseizure medications, can impair balance and awareness, further magnifying accident risk. Environmental factors such as uneven terrain and lack of seizure-safe modifications heighten vulnerability, especially in regions with limited resources for patient education and home adaptation. A holistic understanding of these mechanisms underpins prevention strategies centred on optimal seizure control, tailored antiepileptic regimens and multidisciplinary interventions to reduce morbidity and mortality on a global scale.
