Summary
The concept of industrial districts describes geographically bounded concentrations of specialised firms and institutions that share resources, skills and knowledge to generate collective innovation. Historically rooted in Marshallian externalities, these districts leverage dense social networks, trust-based relationships and a shared culture to facilitate rapid learning and incremental advances. In recent years, the advent of digital technologies and Industry 4.0 has introduced new dynamics. District firms now combine traditional craftsmanship and close-network spillovers with the adoption of big data, cloud platforms and automation tools. This convergence has reshaped knowledge flows, blurring sectoral and territorial boundaries and giving rise to hybrid forms of collaboration. Global value chains, disruptive entrants and digital innovation hubs also intersect with district economies, creating both opportunities for high-tech breakthroughs and challenges to established models of local specialisation. As a result, policymakers and practitioners worldwide seek to balance the district model’s inherent flexibility and social capital with the demands of large-scale digital transformation, sustainability and inclusive growth.
