Integral Field Spectroscopy of Nearby Galaxies
Summary
Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) has revolutionised the study of nearby galaxies by delivering spatially resolved spectral information that reveals variations in stellar populations, gas kinematics and chemical abundances across galactic discs and bulges. By combining two-dimensional imaging with high-resolution spectroscopy, IFS produces data cubes containing a spectrum at each spatial element, or spaxel. This enables detailed mapping of stellar motions, rotation curves and outflows, alongside measurements of emission lines such as Hα and [O III], which trace sites of active star formation and feedback from supernovae or active galactic nuclei. In the local Universe, surveys employing integral field units (IFUs) have characterised radial gradients in age and metallicity, quantified the interplay between star formation and galactic structure, and probed the influence of environment on galaxy evolution. The synergy between these observations and theoretical models has refined our understanding of how galaxies assemble their mass, regulate baryon cycling and quench star formation. Practical applications extend from calibrating cosmological simulations to informing the physical drivers of morphological transformation and the baryonic processes that shape dark-matter halo properties.

Integral Field Spectroscopy of Nearby Galaxies publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in integral field spectroscopy of nearby galaxies across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Integral field spectroscopy (IFS): A technique that obtains a spectrum at every position across a two-dimensional field, producing a three-dimensional data cube of spatial and spectral information.
Integral field unit (IFU): An instrument comprising a bundle of fibres or lenslets that delivers spatially distinct spectra to a spectrograph.
Spaxel: A spatial pixel in an IFS data cube, corresponding to one resolved element on the sky with its own spectrum.
Data cube: A three-dimensional array of IFS data, with two axes representing spatial dimensions and the third representing wavelength.
Hα emission line: A spectral feature at 6563 Å arising from hydrogen recombination, commonly used to trace regions of active star formation.
