Summary

Integrated aquaculture systems combine the cultivation of aquatic organisms with crop or livestock production to form closed‐loop, multifunctional farming models. By harnessing nutrient flows and biological interactions, these approaches reduce waste, enhance resource efficiency and bolster farm resilience. Common configurations include integrated agriculture–aquaculture (IAA), in which pond effluents irrigate crops or fertilise livestock fodder, and polyculture systems that co‐culture complementary aquatic species. Recent innovations extend to multilevel trophic integration, where filter feeders and detritivores consume uneaten feed and waste, and to novel water‐recycling pond designs that optimise water use in regions facing scarcity.

Globally, these systems deliver multiple benefits: they diversify farm income, enhance food and nutrition security and mitigate environmental impacts by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient runoff. Integration offers particular promise for smallholder contexts, where land and water resources are limited and livelihood shocks are common. By blending traditional knowledge with technological advances—such as real‐time water quality monitoring and low‐energy aeration—integrated aquaculture is emerging as a pillar of sustainable intensification in both temperate and tropical regions.

Technical terms

Integrated agriculture–aquaculture (IAA): A farming approach that links aquatic and terrestrial production units so that waste from one component serves as input for another, closing nutrient loops.

Polyculture: The simultaneous cultivation of two or more aquatic species in the same water body, designed to exploit complementary feeding habits or trophic levels.

Nutrient recycling: The process by which waste outputs from fish or livestock production are transformed into fertiliser for crops, reducing external input requirements and environmental discharge.
