Summary

Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is a holistic framework designed to reconcile environmental conservation, economic development and social well-being within coastal areas. It emphasises the need for cross-sectoral coordination among fisheries, tourism, urban planning and conservation bodies to address complex and interlinked challenges such as sea-level rise, habitat loss and competing land‐sea uses. Core elements of ICZM include adaptive governance, which enables iterative learning and flexibility in response to dynamic coastal processes; ecosystem-based management, which seeks to maintain ecological integrity while supporting sustainable resource use; and multi-level governance, ensuring policy coherence from local communities to national administrations.
