Integrated Collector Storage Solar Water Heating Systems
Summary
Integrated Collector Storage (ICS) solar water heating systems combine the functions of solar radiation capture and water storage within a single unit. Water-filled absorber vessels, typically coated with selective or black coatings, directly receive solar energy and store the heated fluid without the need for separate piping loops. The design simplicity reduces installation costs and minimises thermal losses associated with external circulation. Common configurations include flat‐plate tanks, cylindrical modules and compound parabolic troughs, often enhanced with glazing layers, insulation and reflective elements to boost performance. Material innovations such as evacuated tubing, phase change materials and ceramic absorbers have been introduced to improve heat retention during non‐sunlight hours. ICS systems find wide application in domestic hot water provision, small‐scale commercial installations and building‐integrated solutions, where architectural integration and minimal maintenance are priorities. These systems are particularly suited to regions with high solar irradiation and moderate ambient temperatures, offering a low‐tech, reliable means of decarbonising water heating and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Technical terms
Integrated Collector Storage (ICS): A solar heating device combining the absorber and storage tank in one unit to reduce thermal losses and simplify installation.
Phase Change Material (PCM): A substance that absorbs or releases latent heat during phase transitions, used to stabilise temperature and enhance heat retention.
Photovoltaic‐Thermal (PVT) Collector: A hybrid system that simultaneously generates electricity via photovoltaic cells and heat via a thermal absorber.
Thermal Diode: A device that permits heat flow in one direction while limiting reverse conduction, improving collector retention efficiency.
Solar Fraction: The proportion of total hot‐water energy demand met by solar input over a specified period.
