Summary
Integration of HIV and sexual reproductive health services seeks to offer comprehensive care by co-locating or closely linking HIV prevention, testing and treatment with family planning, maternal health, sexually transmitted infection management and related reproductive health interventions. This approach addresses the shared determinants of HIV transmission and reproductive health outcomes, optimises use of scarce resources and reduces fragmentation of care. By uniting services, clients can access testing, counselling, contraception, antenatal care and antiretroviral therapy in a single visit or facility, improving uptake, continuity and cost-effectiveness. Integrated models range from one-stop clinics staffed by multidisciplinary teams to strengthened referral systems that ensure rapid linkage between services. Such models have demonstrated gains in early HIV diagnosis, initiation and retention in treatment, and higher rates of contraceptive use and cervical cancer screening. Yet successful implementation depends on investments in training, infrastructure, supply chains and monitoring systems, as well as attention to stigma, provider workload and client preferences. Globally, this strategy is viewed as essential to achieving universal health coverage and ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
