Intellectual Disability Support and Community Care

Intellectual disability encompasses a spectrum of lifelong conditions characterised by limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour. Effective support for individuals with intellectual disability integrates clinical, educational and social interventions, aiming to promote independence, inclusion and quality of life. Early identification and personalised intervention plans are central to optimising developmental trajectories and reducing secondary health and social complications. Family caregivers play a pivotal role, yet often encounter substantial emotional, financial and informational challenges. Community‐based approaches, including home‐visiting services, peer support networks and inclusive recreational programmes, have demonstrated their ability to strengthen social capital and diminish stigma. Multisectoral collaboration among health professionals, educators, social workers and policy makers underpins the successful delivery of services, ensuring continuity of care across the lifespan. Globally, growing attention to rights‐based frameworks has emphasised access to education, employment and social participation for people with intellectual disability. Innovative models of community care, such as mobile clinics in rural regions and digital platforms for caregiver training, illustrate practical pathways to address resource constraints. As demographic shifts and widening health disparities intensify, research continues to refine evidence‐based strategies that balance clinical rigour with cultural sensitivity and sustainability.

Community‐based rehabilitation: A strategy that mobilises community resources to deliver rehabilitation, equalisation of opportunities and social inclusion for people with disabilities. Early intervention: Timely therapeutic and educational support provided in infancy and early childhood to promote optimal development and mitigate future disability‐related challenges.
