Intersectionality and Organizational Experiences of Black Women
Summary
Research on intersectionality and organisational experiences of Black women examines how overlapping systems of race, gender and class shape professional trajectories, workplace inclusion and leadership opportunities. Black women frequently encounter distinct career barriers, including compounded stereotypes, microaggressions and exclusion from informal networks. These dynamics manifest in lower representation at senior levels, persistent pay gaps and heightened scrutiny of competence. Applying an intersectional lens reveals how organisational structures and policies interact with social biases to produce unique challenges for Black women. Contemporary studies highlight the importance of psychological safety, mentorship and allyship in mitigating adverse outcomes. At a global level, emerging best practices emphasise equitable talent pipelines, inclusive leadership training and data-driven accountability. Insights from diverse sectors demonstrate that systemic change—through targeted resource allocation, transparent performance evaluation and cultural transformation—can foster environments where Black women thrive, benefitting organisations through enriched decision-making, innovation and social legitimacy.
