Interthalamic Adhesion and Cavum Septum Pellucidum in Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Summary

The interthalamic adhesion, or massa intermedia, is a midline grey-matter band connecting the two thalami across the third ventricle. Its presence and morphology vary substantially among individuals and have been tentatively linked to cognitive reserves and resilience following thalamic injury. The cavum septum pellucidum is a cerebrospinal fluid-filled cleft between the leaflets of the septum pellucidum. As a vestigial remnant of embryonic brain development, its persistence or enlargement has been studied as a neurodevelopmental marker in conditions ranging from psychotic disorders to substance dependence. Both structures occupy strategic positions within the limbic circuitry, implicating them in emotional regulation, memory processing and susceptibility to neuropsychiatric illness. Recent advances in high-resolution imaging and volumetric analysis have begun to clarify their prevalence, normative variation and potential role as compensatory or risk factors in diverse clinical populations.
