Urban regions worldwide face a persistent challenge in aligning the spatial distribution of employment opportunities with residential locations. When jobs and housing are poorly co-located, commuters experience longer travel distances and times, leading to increased energy consumption, higher transport costs and degraded quality of life. Population growth, changing land-use policies and evolving preferences for urban form interact to shape employment density, housing affordability and transport infrastructure. Researchers employ a range of analytical tools—from spatial equilibrium models and agent-based simulations to big-data analyses of mobile phone and smartcard records—to quantify mismatches, explore the effects of zoning and subsidies, and evaluate the consequences of polycentric versus monocentric development.
