Kinesiology Taping in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation
Summary
Kinesiology taping has emerged over the past two decades as a complementary intervention in the management of musculoskeletal conditions. By applying elastic adhesive tape directly to the skin overlying muscles and joints, practitioners seek to enhance proprioceptive feedback, support soft-tissue alignment, modulate local circulation and influence motor control. The tape’s elasticity allows full range of motion while imparting a gentle lifting effect on superficial fascia, which may promote lymphatic drainage and reduce chemical mediators of inflammation. In clinical practice, kinesiology taping is used across a wide spectrum of presentations—from acute sports injuries and postoperative swelling to chronic pain syndromes and functional impairments. Reported outcomes include reductions in pain intensity, improvements in joint range of motion and augmented muscle performance, although effects can vary according to application technique, tape tension and patient characteristics. Experimental work has explored both facilitatory and inhibitory taping methods, delineating how different application directions may influence neuromuscular excitability, balance control and muscle strength. Overall, kinesiology taping is valued for its ease of application, low risk profile and potential to complement established rehabilitation protocols, although consensus regarding optimal dosage, duration and clinical indications continues to evolve.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent studies have investigated how the direction of tape application affects postural control and sensory integration following muscle fatigue. In healthy athletes, comparison of facilitation and inhibition taping revealed that neither method altered simple balance tasks on stable surfaces, but inhibition taping increased centre-of-pressure sway when standing barefoot on one leg with eyes open. Under more complex conditions—fatigue and compliant surfaces—both facilitation and inhibition taping produced modest improvements in postural stability. Sensory testing indicated that the facilitation method enhanced two-point discrimination, suggesting a role in augmenting cutaneous feedback without significantly altering superficial sensation. These findings underscore that taping direction can differentially influence balance and sensory systems, informing precise application strategies for rehabilitation of gait and stance stability.

Technical terms
Facilitatory taping: Tape applied from muscle origin to insertion to enhance neuromuscular activation.
Inhibitory taping: Tape applied from muscle insertion to origin to decrease muscle tone or excitability.
Proprioception: The body’s ability to sense joint position and movement through sensory receptors.
Electromyography (EMG): A technique for recording electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles.
