Summary

The allocation of labour within agricultural households and the functioning of rural factor markets are pivotal to global food security, income generation and poverty alleviation. In many low- and middle-income regions, household members allocate time among crop cultivation, livestock rearing, off-farm work and time-intensive chores such as fetching water or grazing livestock. Imperfect or incomplete markets for land, labour, credit and inputs often link household endowments directly to production decisions, undermining productivity. A non-separable household model recognises that production and consumption choices are interdependent when factor markets fail. Empirical studies have documented widespread market distortions: transaction costs, asymmetric information and infrastructural deficits restrict participation and inflate the true cost of inputs. These distortions not only skew intra-household labour allocation—forcing greater reliance on family labour and diminishing off-farm opportunities—but also amplify income volatility and multidimensional poverty. Recent work combines theoretical tests of market separability with novel estimates of shadow prices to quantify hidden scarcities. By highlighting the role of transaction costs and market imperfections, this body of research informs interventions to enhance market access, reduce time burdens and improve household welfare through infrastructure, information systems and policy reforms.
